Cultivation of sugarcane in salty wastelands of eastern Uttar Pradesh

The experiment was carried out on highly alkaline soil (pH 9.7-10). A bund 50 cm wide and 50 cm high was erected around the field to prevent saline water seeping in from neighbouring fields during the rainy season. Pyrites (containing 30% S) was applied at 4.5 t/ha towards the end of the rainy season. The field was then irrigated and left over the winter season with 2 more interim irrigations. The following Mar. the field was irrigated again and cultivated.
