Cultivation of the life cycle stages of Trypanosoma brucei sspp

Cultivation of the life cycle stages of Trypanosoma brucei sspp

Acta Tropica 45(1): 33-43

The authors have combined the techniques pioneered by Hirumi and others for cultivating Trypanosoma brucei in vitro in medium containing a feeder layer of mammalian cells with Cunningham's method of growing the insect stages of the life-cycle in medium containing explants of Glossina tissues, to enable them to grow all life-cycle stages sequentially in vitro with relatively high yields at all stages. (The complete life-cycle of T. brucei has been obtained by Hirumi and co-workers in medium containing feeder mammalian cells, but yields of infective metacyclic forms were low (see Hill and Hirumi, Trop. Dis. Bull., 1984, 81, abst. 3108).).
