On heavy clay soil direct sowing of rice gave better results in permeable fields because emergence was irregular in fields of low water permeability. The optimum sowing rate was 30 kg/ha, giving 60-100 seedlings/msuperscript 2. For a strong-stemmed medium or late maturing cultivar such as Nishihomare sown in late June a basal application of 55 kg N/ha was required, with a further 1.5 kg in late July or early Aug. if required.
