Cultural and nutritional studies in relation to seed production in onion (Allium cepa L.). II. Effect of bulb size, spacing and nitrogen on plant growth and seed yield

Two-year trials were carried out with the Hisar-2. Planting bulbs of 50 g and above significantly increased plant height, number of sprouts and scapes and seed yield compared with small and medium size bulbs. Closer spacings (30 and 40 cm) significantly increased plant height over that for wider (50 cm) spacing. The number of scapes and seed yield per plant were higher under wider spacing but seed yield/ha was significantly higher under the closest spacing (30 cm).
