Cunninghamella bertholletiae infection associated with deferoxamine therapy

Cunninghamella bertholletiae infection associated with deferoxamine therapy

Reviews of Infectious Diseases 10(6): 1187-1194

A case is reported in a 48-yr-old woman who presented with fever, non-productive cough and headache. Eighteen months previously the patient had received deferoxamine therapy for iron overload. A chest radiograph revealed a right middle lobe infiltrate and CT of the chest showed consolidation of the right middle lobe with multiple nodular densities. The patient underwent resection of the right lung and the pulmonary artery was found to be plugged with a soft, tan-white material.
