Cure of mucormycosis in a renal transplant patient receiving ciclosporin with maintenance of immunosuppression

Cure of mucormycosis in a renal transplant patient receiving ciclosporin with maintenance of immunosuppression

American Journal of Nephrology 8(2): 139-142

A case is reported in a 35-yr-old female renal transplant patient who presented with a 3-d history of right-sided facial pain and swelling. Frozen sections of a biopsy of a palatal lesion revealed non-septate, branching hyphae and cultures grew Rhizopus oryzae. The patient underwent debridement, palatectomy, maxillectomy and ethmoidectomy. Amphotericin B was administered at 1 mg/kg daily concomitant with stress doses of corticosteroids which were promptly lowered to 10 mg of prednisone daily.
