Current and future considerations for breeding programmes in pigs

Current and future considerations for breeding programmes in pigs

Proceedings The 5th AAAP Animal Sciences Congress, May 27 June 1, 1990, Taipei, Re ic of China, Vol 2: 211-246

The 1st part of this paper reviews recent developments that have led to improvements in the efficiency of breeding programmes in pigs. These include improved methods of measuring carcass composition (by X-ray computer tomography), development of specialised maternal lines, use of family index selection to increase the accuracy of prediction of breeding values, use of hyperprolific sows, and use of physiological indicators of reproductive performance.
