Current and prospective problems of hunger and malnutrition: beyond the reach of the invisible hand

Current and prospective problems of hunger and malnutrition: beyond the reach of the invisible hand

1988 World Food Conference proceedings Volume II: issue papers: 141-155

This paper considers how far the 'invisible hand' can work in radically reducing hunger under current economic conditions. The 'invisible hand' concept; the paradox of hunger; distortion of world markets; agricultural policies; poverty; the complementarity problems of the developed and developing countries; and aid are assessed with reference to the results of a research project started at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in 1976, on how to alleviate global hunger.
