Current biotechnological developments in Thailand



Critical Reviews in Biotechnology 9(1): 41-59



This review covers the following subjects: (1) social and economic background; (2) historical perspectives (including the Regional Network for Microbiology in Southeast Aisa, JSPS-NRCT cooperative research (between Japan and Thailand) programme, international postgraduate university course in microbiology); (3) Thailand's national policy and plan related to biotechnology; (4) scientific and technological base for biotechnology development (research and development institutions and support facilities, and educaton and training); (5) funding; (6) research, development and application of biotechnology (in agriculture, health and medicine, and industry); and (7) international collaboration. Brief details of plant propagation, elimination of pathogens, selection of variants, development of homozygous lines via haploidy, and preservation of germplasm in Thailand are given, as well as biotechnology for animal production and health, and for biofertilization and biological control. The collaboration of the National Gene Bank of Thailand, Microbiological Resource Centres, the Unit Cell of Plant Tissue Culture and the BNF Resource Centre with external groups is mentioned. The locations and core strengths of institutions engaged in biotechnology and genetic engineering in Thailand are tabulated.
