Dioryctria sylvestrella, one of the main pests of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster), breeds once a year in the Massif of the Landes in south-western France. The 11-month larval development takes place in the inner bark, pupation takes place in resin accumulated on the trunk, and the pupal period is about 3 weeks. Reproductive flight occurs at night at foliage height (6-9 m above the ground) between 15 June and the end of July, with a peak around 7-15 July.
