Current state and future prospects in breeding rye hybrids at the Institute of Plant Breeding and Acclimatization

Polish work at Radzikow since the early 1980s using cytoplasmic male sterility of the Pampas type is outlined. Many CMS lines, sterility maintainers and fertility restorers were produced. In a 3-year study, about 30% of hybrids (CMS testers X restorers) gave higher yields than the control, and 14% of the hybrids outyielded the control by >10% (the best by as much as 30-40%). Among a group of hybrids of the CMS line X population type, 35% outyielded the control (18% by >10%).
