Cutaneous mucormycosis associated with acute myeloblastic leukemia

Cutaneous mucormycosis associated with acute myeloblastic leukemia

Japanese Journal of Medical Mycology 30(4): 288-296

A case is reported in a 56-yr-old woman with acute myeloblastic leukaemia who noted a small black papular lesion on her left forearm under an adhesive bandage. The ulcer rapidly enlarged to more than 5 cm in diameter by the 5th day. Histological sections of the skin lesion showed numerous non-septate hyphae spreading throughout the dermis and invading the walls of blood vessels. Rhizopus microsporus var. rhizopodiformis was isolated from the skin lesion.
