Cyclical changes in the abundance of Ixodes persulcatus in Udmurtiya

Cyclical changes in the abundance of Ixodes persulcatus in Udmurtiya

Meditsinskaya Parazitologiya i Parazitarnye Bolezni ( 1): 65-69

Numbers of I. persulcatus were monitored in a focus of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in the Zab'yalovsk district of the Udmurt ASSR, USSR, for 32 years (1954 and 1956-86). Three types of cycle were observed, with mean durations of 5.5, 11.1 and 22.2 years. Old inhabitants of the region recollect that there was a considerable increase in tick numbers during the late 1930s/early 1940s, i.e. 22 years before the 1st high peak noted in the study. High peaks coincided with a decline in solar energy.
