Cyclohexanedione Herbicides Are Selective and Potent Inhibitors of Acetyl-CoA Carboxylase from Grasses

Studies with plant species (barley Briggs, wheat Anza and maize Dekalb) susceptible to alloxydim, sethoxydim and clethodim ((+or-)-2-((E)-(3-chloroallyloxyimino)propyl)-5-(2-ethylthiopropyl)-3-hydroxycyclohex-2-enone) demonstrated that the herbicides inhibited acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase, the second enzyme common to both fatty acid and flavonoid biosynthetic pathways. The Ki for the herbicides tested ranged from 0.02 to 1.95 micro M, depending on species.
