The importance of distant hybridization in the origin of fruit crops is examined, and the history of hybridization between Cydonia and Malus is outlined. Descriptions are given of F1 hybrids bred by various people, together with a generalized description of F2 quince X apple allopolyploids, which represent a new genetic source for improving pome fruits.
