Dactylogyrus (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae) from seven species of Notropis (Pisces: Cyprinidae) from the Tennessee River drainage: descriptions of four new species and remarks on host relationships

Proceedings of the Helminthological Society of Washington, 552: 214-223

Four of 10 species of Dactylogyrus found on 6 of 7 species of Notropis examined in the Tennessee River drainage were new: D. circumflexus sp. nov. from N. chrysocephalus chrysocephalus in Little River, Blount County, differs from D. arcus, D. dubius and D. spatulus sp. nov. in a shorter accessory piece (one quarter to one third of the length of the cirrus shaft from the terminus of the cirrus shaft); D. delicatus sp. nov. (same host and locality) differs from D. lepidus in the bifurcated accessory piece with medial ramus with short blunt projection and a long delicate sharply pointed distal ramus; D. dolus sp. nov. from N. coccogenis in Citico Creek, Monroe County, differs from D. manicatus in the cirrus shaft arched most near the distal end, the presence of a small bulb on the terminus of the basal process and the shape (straight and dagger-like) of the terminus of the accessory piece; D. spatulus sp. nov. from N. telescopus in Little River, Blount County, differs from D. arcus, D. circumflexus and D. dubius in the length and shape of the accessory piece; D. spatulus was also found on N. ariommus, N. coccogenis, N. leuciodus, N. rubricroceus and N. telescopus. Both D. dolus and D. spatulus were found in other rivers both in Tennessee and North Carolina. D. bulbus, D. lepidus, D. luxili, D. manicatus and D. perlus were all found on N. chrysocephalus chrysocephalus; Dactylogyrus sp. cf. sceptici was found on N. ariommus. D. perlus is considered as a senior synonym of D. banghami. The relationships between Notropis species as suggested by their Dactylogyrus parasites are discussed.
