A linear discriminant function was used to estimate the level of milk progesterone which allowed the best classification of cows into pregnant and non-pregnant groups. Progesterone levels were measured in milk samples taken 20-24 days after insemination. This function was tested on 188 pregnant and 103 non-pregnant cows, correctly classifying 98.0% of all cases (98.9% of pregnant cows and 97.1% of non-pregnant cows), and the discriminating level for progesterone was set at 5 ng/ml milk.
