Differences in pre-harvest sprouting damage in wheat cultivars and improvements in its testing method

Sprouting in the ear in 18 wheat cultivars was estimated by supporting 120 ears upright in darkness at 18 degrees C. The number of hours before sprouting began varied with cultivar and after it had begun it increased with time up to 88 h. In ears which had been stored for up to 30 d at various temp. before sprouting, the degree of sprouting was correlated with storage temp. at up to 20 degrees but not with higher storage temp.
