Digestibility and digestible dry matter yield of Papua grass (Brachiaria plantaginea) as affected by cutting frequency and nitrogen

In field trials at Santa Maria, a pure stand of B. plantaginea was sown in Oct. 1986 and given 0 or 100 kg N/ha applied in split dressings and 2 and 15 Dec. 1986 (30 kg each) and 1 Jan. 1987 (40 kg). All plots were cut to a uniform height on 10 Dec. 1986, after which swards were cut at 4-, 6- or 8-week intervals (a total of 3, 2 and 1 cuts, resp.) or were cut once at the pre-flowering stage (approx. 10% of plants flowering) or at full flowering.
