Dryland management: the Machakos District, Kenya

The major challenge in the Machakos District is to promote sustainable agricultural activity through soil and water conservation and improved farming practices. Farming in the district is largely for subsistence, with little cash for health requirements, education, clothing, pesticides, and fertilizers. The majority of the farmers face soil erosion problems, usually sheet or gully erosion.
