In trials in 1975-77 the effects of sowing in early or late May, in drills or at spacings of 4, 6 or 9 cm, and applying 90 or 180 kg N/ha on DM, sugar and soluble ash content of sugarbeet stecklings at harvest and after storage were studied. Early sowing increased DM content and DM loss in storage and increased sugar content except in dry years. N rate did not affect DM or sugar content, but DM losses were higher at the low N rate.
