In field trials at Igarape, Minas Gerais, Brazil, pure P. purpureum stands were closed in Jan., Feb., Mar. or Apr. and forage samples taken monthly in May-Oct. NDF, ADF, cellulose, lignin, DM and CP contents, in vitro DM digestibility (IVDMD) and DM yields were 71.99, 47.07, 38.69, 7.20, 39.63 and 3.16%, 39.72% and 13.91 t/ha, resp., at the Jan. closing date; corresponding values at the Apr. closing date were 65.96, 37.28, 32.41, 3.43, 28.42 and 7.20%, 50.93% and 1.47 t. Ca and P contents of DM were 0.26 and 0.10%, resp., with Jan. closing and 0.40 and 0.15 with closing in Apr. Hemicellulose content was 25.03 in Jan. and 28.50% in Apr. Values for NDF, ADF, cellulose and lignin contents, DM yield, CP content, IVDMD and P content were 65.39, 40.20, 34.25 and 4.24%, 5.64 t, 7.50, 52.4 and 0.16%, resp., at sampling in May with corresponding Oct. values of 71.34, 43.89, 37.03 and 6.01%, 4.19 t, 41.75% and 0.10%. There were significant closing date x sampling date interactions for CP, NDF and cellulose content.
