Effect of different forms of millet straw amendments on the level and composition of organic matter in two tropical sandy soils (Senegal)

Field experiments were carried out on two sandy soils in Senegal ("Dior" and "Dek") to investigate the effects of amending soil with millet straw. The straw was treated in four ways: (i) mulching; (ii) burning; (iii) burying; or (iv) composting. After 2-3 years treatments (i) and (iv) showed soil OM (C, N) increases of 25-50% and increases in total P and S.
