Effect of different populations of sorghum shootfly on efficacy of carbofuran seed treatment

A field trial was conducted in India during kharif 1980 to study the incidence and damage caused by the muscid Atherigona soccata on carbofuran-treated and untreated sorghum, sown on 3 dates. The efficacy of carbofuran against A. soccata was directly related to the population density of the pest. Under moderate pest incidence of less than 40% deadhearts in the control, carbofuran seed treatment (at 0.4 kg a.i./ha) provided complete protection.
