In field trials at Hitsujigaoka in 1984, sugarbeet was grown on a black andosol or a brown andosol with minimum tillage or conventional tillage with transplanting at the same time as or 15 d after the minimum tillage treatment. The brown andosol was more resistant to penetration than the black andosol and both were more resistant after minimum than conventional tillage.
