Sugarcane (cv. C.374-72) sets were planted at spacings of 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24 or 27 sets/m within the row and 1.4, 1.5 or 1.6 m between rows. The number of stalks produced per plot increased with decreasing spacing within the row, and was greatest with the 1.4 m between-row spacing. At all planting densities, the number of stalks produced per plot increased up to the 5th month of the 6-month trial, and decreased during the last month.
