In field trials at Joydebpur, Bangladesh in 1983-86, deep water rice was established at initial densities of 50, 100, 150, 200, 225 or 350 seedlings/msuperscript 2. Tillering increased linearly with density up to the preflood stage with an av. total of 5.8 tillers/plant in low density plots, 3 tillers/plant in medium density plots and 2 tillers/plant in high density plots. Tiller number decreased at peak flooding by 13.6, 21.4 and 20.2% in low, medium and high density plots, resp.
