In field trials in 1981-83, spring barley and oats were grown as companion crops for Medicago sativa at sowing rates of 30, 60 and 100 kg seeds/ha with harvesting either at milk ripeness of the cereal or the start of flowering in M. sativa. In the year of establishment, oats + M. sativa gave higher 1st cut fodder yields than barley + M. sativa.
