Effects of environmental factors on variability and selection in a population of Panicum maximum Jacq

In a field trial 49 clones were evaluated for yield and other quantitative characters under dry and irrigated conditions for 2 years. Statistical analyses (principal component analysis and analysis of variance) were used to select clones with good performances in dry (7 clones), irrigated (3 clones) and both conditions (SIH248, SIH369 and SIH231). Temperature, precipitation and relative humidity had significant effects on yield (r = 0.92, 0.91 and 0.89, respectively).
