Components of the cutting force were measured and several cutting phenomena were observed during slicing of air-dried specimens of Cryptomeria japonica and Parashorea malaanonan which were fixed to an experimental apparatus. The effects of the inclination angle of the knife and of the ratio of the sliding velocity to the feeding velocity were clarified.
