Effects of sulphur dioxide on forest litter decomposition and nutrient release
Chamber fumigation of Pinus nigra litter needles with constant or fluctuating concn. of SO2, and open air field fumigation of P. sylvestris litter needles with environmentally realistic concn. of SO2 suggest that SO2 is readily dry deposited to forest litter where it oxidizes to form sulphuric acid. Litter respiration was inhibited by SO2 concn. commonly encountered in rural air.
