Effects of the levels of minerals, sugar and growth regulators on in vitro development of ovules and pollen tube elongation in excised grape flowers
The in vitro growth of unopened flowers of Pione (which sets fruit poorly) was compared with that of Muscat of Alexandria flowers (good set). Ovary growth in both cultivars was increased when the concentration of the basal Nitsch medium and/or of the nitrogen component was increased by 2-4 times, but ovule development within and pollen tube elongation into the enlarged ovaries was inhibited in Pione but not in Muscat.
