Effects of the morphopedological heritage in the distribution of forest communities: Sorab-Siddapur region, southern India
In the Sorab region, Karnataka, kan forests (islands of evergreen forest) are found in an area where deciduous stands would normally be expected because of the climate. Usually, precipitation of 2000 mm/yr is required for evergreen forest, but these kan forests receive only 1500-2000 mm/yr. There is an almost complete correlation between the presence of red fine gravel soils and the occurrence of kan forest islands.
