The objectives of this set of experiments were: (1). To evalua te the possibility of improving root lodging resistance of downy mildew resistant inbred lines using root pulling strength. (2) To find better locations and growing seasons for indirect selection for root lodging resistance using the root pulling strength. (3). To determine the relationships of the root pulling strength and the root weight with the grain yield, to see whether or not indirect selection for root lodging resistance using root pulling strength will reduce yield. (4). To determine the relationship of the combining ability for the grain yield and the combining ability for the root pulling strength. A positive correlation between these two parameters is prerequisite for the development of superior hybrids with high yield and high root lodging resistance. The results showed that there was sufficient variation of the root pulling strength among inbred line source populations for the success of selection to obtain inbred lines with high root pulling strength. Two environments, i.e. Sukamandi during the dry season and Kuningan in the wet season were probably better and more efficient environments for the selection to improve root pulling strength, than Sukamandi during the wet season. At the first two environments, variations of the root pulling strength tend to be greater, suggested that selection can be made among greater number of genotypes. Indirect selection for root lodging resistance using root pulling strength will not necessarily reduce yield; root pulling strength and grain yield show a highly significant and positive correlation. It is possible to develop superior hybrids with high yield and high root pulling strength; the combining abilities for these two traits are positively correlated.
