Evaluation of survey methods for estimating sorghum midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) densities in grain sorghum

Six methods for sampling field populations of ovipositing Contarinia sorghicola in grain sorghum panicles were compared to an absolute sampling method in the field in Arkansas and Oklahoma in 1987. Population estimates obtained by visual examination (2.0 and 4.9/panicle) were similar to absolute estimates (1.8 and 5.5/panicle) when the population density was low, but differed significantly at mean densities of >9.2/panicle.
