Examination of the effect of mechanical harvesting on differences in the quality and quantity of sugarbeet

Five thousand sugarbeet roots which had been mechanically harvested in Yugoslavia were inspected. The harvesters were fitted with knives which removed the tops and leaves, but they achieved the target level of cut ("profitable cutting") for less than 40% of roots. Factors affecting their efficiency include the condition of the soil, the weed density, and the density and pattern of planting of the roots.
