Excretory-secretory and somatic antigens of Brugia malayi

Excretory-secretory (ES) and somatic antigens of adult B. malayi were analysed by SDS-PAGE. ES antigens produced 11 protein bands in the range 10-70 000 MW, and somatic antigens produced 30-35 bands. Many bands were shown to be common to both antigens; this was confirmed by CIEP. A Staphylococcus aureus radioimmunoprecipitation assay (Staph-A RIA) revealed that ES products were more immunogenic than somatic products. ES antigens were found to react with sera from patients with filariasis. Staph-A RIA using single infection sera from patients with filarial and non-filarial helminth infections showed that the immune response to ES antigens was much greater in filarial patients than in those harbouring other helminth parasites.
