Exercise nutrition for women: a review article

Exercise nutrition for women: a review article

Proceedings of the Nutrition Society of New Zealand 13: 102-108

Participation by women in strenuous sport has increased during the past 10 years, with an associated increase in levels of training and competition. This will have advantages to the cardio-respiratory and musculo-skeletal systems of women, but may also have other effects. Menstrual dysfunction and athletic amenorrhoea are common in exercising women. Low oestrogen concentrations may result in reduced bone density which may result in premature osteoporosis and stress fractures.
