Exfoliative cytology in Iraqi school children infested with Schistosoma haematobium

Exfoliative cytology in Iraqi school children infested with Schistosoma haematobium

Journal of the Faculty of Medicine, Baghdad 30(1): 53-58

A hundred schoolchildren (aged 9-16 years and with a history of S. haematobium infection of 1-3 years duration) in Huria, Iraq, were examined twice yearly for 3 years starting in 1980, to evaluate the importance of early diagnosis in bladder cancer. Ten of the 100 children had abnormal cells in their urine. Two had atypical squamous metaplasia, 4 had squamous metaplasia, one had leukoplakia and 3 had groups of cells with slightly enlarged nuclei. No tumour cells were found.
