Exhaustion effect of chemical stimulants on intensive resin tapping of Pinus elliottii var. elliottii

Resin was collected from a 17-yr-old stand in Sao Paulo for 3 yr (1982/83 to 1984/85) using 5 stimulant treatments in the first 2 yr: (a) paste containing 5% ethrel LS and 25% H2SO4; (b) 5% ethrel 2 and 25% H2SO4; (c) 50% H2SO4; (d) 25% H2SO4; and (e) untreated. In the 3rd yr all trees were treated with 25% H2SO4. During the 3rd harvest, trees given treatments (a)-(d) in the first 2 yr gave much lower yields (1.653-1.678 kg/tree on av.) than previously (2.254-4.090 kg/tree).
