Expansion characteristics of montmorillonite and saponite under various relative humidity conditions

Expansion characteristics of montmorillonite and saponite under various relative humidity conditions

Clay Science 7(3): 129-138

The basal spacings of homoionic (Na+, K+ and Ca2+) montmorillonite and saponite were examined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis under varying relative humidity (RH) conditions. The variations of basal spacing were almost similar in both minerals at the range of 0 to 80% RH. However, noticeable differences between their hydration state were observed at 100% RH.
