Expansive soil in canals: Purna project-a case study

Expansive soil in canals: Purna project-a case study

Proceedings 6th International Conference on Expansive Soils, New Delhi, 1-4 December 1987 Volume 1: 377-381

This paper presents the case study of kilometer 21 of the Purna canal in Maharashtra, with embankment of expansive black cotton soil. Slips had been observed for almost 15 years since completion and were a major source of problem in irrigating the command area. The conventional approach of providing CNS layers was not possible for want of availability of such materials and for want of long closures in the canal. A different approach was tried successfully.
