Experience from research into the use of pheromones to regulate harmful moths in orchards and viticulture

Experience from research into the use of pheromones to regulate harmful moths in orchards and viticulture

Schriftenreihe des Bundesministers fur Ernahrung, Landwirtschaft und Forsten, A Angewandte Wissenschaft, German Federal Re ic (344): 129-144, 173

Accounts are given of the chemical structure of the pheromones of Lepidoptera, the recent rapid progress in pheromone research, the differing types of application of pheromones in plant protection, prerequisites for the successful use of pheromones to regulate tortricids in fruit and vine growing using the confusion technique with special reference to Eupoecilia ambiguella in Rheinland-Pfalz, German Federal Republic, factors influencing the practical application of pheromones using the technique, and results obtained with E. ambiguella in practical tests over 200 ha in 1985. These were directed against the 2nd-generation larvae, and an average reduction in damage of 80% was achieved. The prospects for extending the use of this method are discussed.
