The Kashima petrochemical complex and the Fukashiba industrial wastewater treatment plant in Japan are described. The plant treated a total of 59 800 msuperscript 3/d of industrial wastewater, as well as municipal wastewater from the surrounding area. The main treatment process used was the activated sludge process, with high dissolved oxygen and long solids retention times.
