Experiment on the control of jujube witches' broom by stem ringing

Trees of Ziziphus jujuba infected by witches' broom were girdled on the mid-basal portion of stems with rings 3-5 cm in width in 1987-88 in Henan, China. The treated plants showed a decrease in disease incidence from 59.8% to 7.1%, and the disease severity index decreased from 40.28 to 3.38. Relative control was 92.4%. This indicates that stem ringing can prevent spread of the disease in trees when the pathogen is in the incubation stage.
