Experimental Sarcocystis hominis infection in cattle: lesions and ultrastructure of sarcocysts

Experimental Sarcocystis hominis infection in cattle: lesions and ultrastructure of sarcocysts

Journal of Parasitology 74(5): 875-879

Five calves inoculated orally with 105-106 sporocysts of S. hominis from human faeces were killed 10, 18, 24, 111, and 222 days pi. Calves became febrile (> 40-41 degrees C) between 10 and 24 days pi and developed mild anaemia (PCV were reduced by 40% of initial values) between 29 and 57 days pi but otherwise remained clinically normal. Focal hepatitis, mesenteric lymphadenitis, and myocarditis were seen in calves at 10, 18 and 24 days pi.
