The importance of the field boundary as a potential source of invertebrate reinvasion into plots treated with dimethoate at 340 g a.i./ha was investigated in the UK in 1987 in a 24-ha winter wheat field divided into 4 plots each measuring 340 x 160 m. Similar patterns of decline and recovery of the carabids Bembidion lampros, B. obtusum and Pterostichus melanarius were detected at both the edge and centre of the plots, indicating that insects were reinvading from the untreated control plots.
