Experimental evaluation of a new test kit, Salmonella Rapid Test (Oxoid), for salmonellae detection in food and feed

The efficiency of the Salmonella Rapid Test Kit (Oxoid), which combines selective growth conditions with 2 indicator media of sulphide production and lactose/sucrose fermentation, was evaluated. Pure cultures of the pathogens Salmonella tymphimurium and S. mbandaka were used along with competing enteric bacteria. Salmonellae were easily detected within 48 h when the inoculum was >=50 c.f.u./ml of incubated pre-enrichment broth.
