Experimental infection of calves and sheep with bovine isolates of Giardia

Experimental infection of calves and sheep with bovine isolates of Giardia

Schweizer Archiv fur Tierheilkunde 131(9): 551-564

Nine calves aged 6-35 days were each dosed with 5 million Giardia cysts. After a prepatent period of 7-8 days, all calves excreted large numbers of Giardia cysts for 60-112 days, but without illness developing, apart from slight diarrhoea at first. Trophozoites were demonstrated in the jejunum of 4 calves and in the ileum of a fifth. Pathological changes in the intestines were attributed to accompanying bacteria and viruses.
