Experimental intramammary infection of dairy cows with Listeria monocytogenes

Three groups of 9 lactating Holstein cows were inoculated with Listeria monocytogenes (Lm), via lacrimal, oral, and/or intramammary routes. Effects of Lm infection on body temperature, milk yield, and persistent shedding of Lm were monitored daily; serum antibody titres to Lm were determined weekly for 9-12 months. Initial intramammary inoculation of 10superscript 3 -107 Lm induced fever (106 degrees F), transient 75% drop in milk yield, but no detectable Lm in cultures up to 9 days.
